About Dr. McAllister

Dr. Fiona McAllister is Molly’s craniofacial surgeon and leads the cleft care offered at Newport Beach, La Jolla and Pasadena. She earned her DDS at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry and her MD at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, completed her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Illinois Hospital, and then completed a fellowship in cleft and craniofacial surgery at Rady Children’s Hospital and UC San Diego. She joined Molly in 2003.

Cleft care spans childhood. She works with each family’s cleft and craniofacial team, including orthodontists, speech therapists and pediatricians, on the surgeries a child may need along the way, such as bone grafting of the gum line around age eight to eleven and corrective jaw surgery in the late teens. She also performs corrective jaw surgery for adults and repairs facial fractures, and she reviews complex facial cases for surgeons across the group.

Dr. McAllister is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Families say she remembers every child’s name and story, and that she explains each stage years in advance so nothing comes as a surprise. She volunteers for overseas cleft surgery trips most years.

Outside the operating room

She rows on Mission Bay at dawn, volunteers on overseas cleft surgery trips, and grows roses that her patients’ parents sometimes go home with.

Our son has seen Dr. McAllister since he was a baby, and now at 11 he had his bone graft at Molly Pasadena. She explains things to him directly, not just to us. The Wednesday clinic feels like a team that actually talks to each other.
