About this office

Oral & facial surgery in Long Beach

Long Beach opened in 2013 on Atlantic Avenue, directly across from Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children's & Women's Hospital. The Wardlow station on the A Line is a short walk west, and the 405 is two minutes north. Patients come from Bixby Knolls, Cal Heights, Signal Hill, Lakewood and Los Alamitos, and a fair number are students at Cal State Long Beach.

Dr. James Harrington has practiced oral surgery since 1998. He removes wisdom teeth and difficult teeth, places bone grafts and preserves sockets so future implants have something to anchor in. Patients often describe him as unhurried, and he is the surgeon many local dentists send their own families to.

Dr. Sophia Okonkwo leads oral pathology care here. Because we are across the street from a major medical center, she frequently sees patients referred by physicians at Memorial and coordinates biopsies, imaging and treatment with their teams. She also repairs facial fractures and handles complex extractions.

Dr. Aisha Rahman, a periodontist, treats gum recession and works alongside both surgeons on grafting. Marisol Vega, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, is here on Tuesdays for general anesthesia, which many patients with medical conditions or dental anxiety prefer. Our team includes Khmer, Tagalog and Spanish speakers, reflecting the neighborhoods we serve from Cambodia Town to North Long Beach. Bring any recent X-rays or biopsy reports you have, and we will add them to your file before you arrive.

I needed a molar out and wanted to keep my options open for an implant. Dr. Harrington and Dr. Rahman did the extraction and graft together. The written estimate covered both, and insurance paid exactly what they predicted.

Dr. Harrington took out my son's wisdom teeth during his winter break from Cal State. He explained the risks plainly and did not oversell anything. The evening call from the surgeon himself surprised us. My son was back at the gym in a week.

My doctor at Memorial sent me across the street for a sore that would not heal. Dr. Okonkwo examined me that week and explained everything carefully. A team member translated for my father in Khmer. It turned out to be nothing serious.
