Dental or medical?

How oral surgery gets billed

Oral surgeons treat the mouth, jaws and face, so your care can fall under either kind of insurance. Here is how it usually works.

  1. 01

    Dental insurance

Usually covers extractions, wisdom teeth, bone grafts and part of an implant, up to your plan’s annual maximum, often $1,000 to $2,000.

  2. 02

    Medical insurance

Usually covers corrective jaw surgery, facial fractures, biopsies, pathology and sleep apnea surgery, subject to your deductible.

  3. 03

    Sometimes both

Imaging, anesthesia, or a wisdom tooth with a cyst may be billed to medical first and dental second. We coordinate the claims.

  4. 04

    Pre-authorization

For jaw surgery and larger implant cases, we request approval before scheduling. It typically takes two to six weeks.

  5. 05

    Your written quote

Shows what each plan is expected to pay and your share. If an estimate changes after the insurer replies, we tell you before surgery.

Financing

Pay over time, your way

Every option is in your written quote, so you can compare before you decide. HSA and FSA cards work for eligible surgery, anesthesia and imaging.

  • 0% in-house plans

Spread treatment over up to 12 months at 0% interest, with a modest deposit. No credit check.

  • CareCredit

A healthcare credit card with 6–24 month promotional financing for qualified applicants.

  • Sunbit

A quick, soft-pull application with a decision in about 30 seconds. Monthly plans from 3 to 72 months.

  • Proceed Finance

Long-term financing designed for full-arch and larger implant treatment, with fixed monthly payments.

  • HSA & FSA

Health savings and flexible spending cards work for eligible surgery, anesthesia and imaging.

Example

A single implant with a 0% in-house plan

An implant, abutment and crown from $3,900. If your dental plan pays $1,500, you’d owe $2,400, or about $200 a month for 12 months, with no interest and no credit check.

Billing questions

Does dental or medical insurance pay for oral surgery?

It depends on the procedure. Wisdom teeth, extractions, implants and grafts are usually billed to dental insurance. Corrective jaw surgery, facial trauma, biopsies and sleep apnea surgery are usually billed to medical insurance. Some care, such as infected wisdom teeth or anesthesia, can involve both. We check your dental and medical plans before treatment and show the expected payments on one written estimate.

Will I know the full cost before surgery?

Yes. Before anything is scheduled, you receive one written estimate that includes imaging, anesthesia, the procedure itself and follow-up visits. We verify your dental and medical benefits first, so the estimate shows what your plans are expected to pay and what your share is likely to be. If anything changes during treatment, we explain it before going ahead.

Which insurance plans do you accept?

We are in network with most dental PPO plans, including Delta Dental of California, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, United Concordia, Ameritas, Principal, Humana, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California and GEHA. We bill medical insurance for jaw surgery, trauma, pathology and sleep apnea surgery. If your plan isn't listed, call us and we'll check it for you.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes. We offer 0% in-house payment plans of up to 12 months, and we work with CareCredit and Sunbit. For full-arch implant treatment, Proceed Finance offers longer terms. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for most procedures. Our team can walk you through the options when you receive your quote.

Do you accept Denti-Cal (Medi-Cal Dental)?

Denti-Cal is accepted for patients under 21 at select Molly offices. Call your nearest office and we'll confirm whether it participates and which procedures are covered. Children with cleft-related needs may also qualify for California Children's Services (CCS).
