Dr. Benjamin Ortiz, DDS, MD, FACS

Dr. Benjamin Ortiz leads Molly’s jaw and facial surgery in San Diego County. He earned his DDS at the UCSF School of Dentistry and his MD at the UCSF School of Medicine, completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at UCSF, and spent his early career taking facial trauma call in San Diego hospitals. He joined Molly La Jolla in 2006 and helped open the Carmel Valley office in 2018.

His practice centers on corrective jaw surgery for teens and adults, planned with the patient’s orthodontist using 3D CBCT imaging and virtual surgical planning. He performs maxillomandibular advancement for obstructive sleep apnea in coordination with sleep medicine physicians, and genioplasty, either on its own or as part of a larger jaw operation. He also repairs facial fractures, from a broken cheekbone after a surfing accident to complex injuries.

Dr. Ortiz is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He teaches residents at local hospitals and lectures orthodontic study groups on surgical planning. Patients appreciate that he shows them the computer plan, explains what will move and by how much, and is honest about the recovery: swelling that peaks in the first few days, several weeks of soft diet, and numbness that usually improves over months.
